Diese englische Maxime (übersetzt »Mein Heim ist meine Burg«) geht auf den englischen Juristen und Politiker Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634) zurück. Im 3. Band seiner Sammlung und Interpretation alter englischer Gesetze und Gerichtsbeschlüsse (»Institutes«) schrieb er, dass es einem Hausherrn sehr wohl gestattet sein müsse, sich gegen Diebe, Räuber und Angreifer zur Wehr zu setzen und zusammen mit Freunden und Nachbarn seinen Besitz mit Waffengewalt zu verteidigen, for a man's house is his castle (»denn eines Mannes Haus ist seine Burg«; 3rd Institute, cap. 73). Der Satz wurde in der Form An Englishman's home is his castle bald im Englischen populär und fand vor allem in der Abwandlung My home is my castle dann auch im Deutschen Verbreitung. Man zitiert ihn heute, um zum Ausdruck zu bringen, dass alles, was in den eigenen vier Wänden geschieht, niemanden etwas angeht und diese Privatsphäre für alle anderen tabu ist.
